Retired U.S. Marine Corps four-star general John Rutherford Allen assumed the presidency of the Brookings Institution in November 2017. The co-author of the book Turning Point: Policymaking in the Era of Artificial Intelligence along with Darrell M. West (Brookings Press, 2020), General Allen is the first Marine to command a theater of war. He commanded 150,000 U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan from July 2011 to February 2013. John Allen has a BS from the U.S. Naval Academy, an MA from Georgetown University, MS from the Defense Intelligence College (now National Intelligence University), and MS in national security strategy from the National Defense University.
